I love aligning activities with a great book! I like to read this book and complete this activity during the first week of school when we are getting to know each other and names. It’s also great for students who are learning how to recognize, spell, and write their own names.
Other activities to do with this book: shaving cream/playdough/letter magnet names, graph the number letters or syllables of each student’s name, play name games, make acrostic poems with names, make name bracelets using letter beads, etc!

Tissue paper names:
Before we complete this craft, we read: Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes.

Find the book for purchase here … or have it read aloud online here AND/or here!
Materials:

• White crayon, colored pencil, or any white writing utensil
• black paper (my suggestion for the tissue paper to pop, but you can use any color!)
• Scissors & glue of choice
• Tissue paper
How to:
Use desired size of construction paper, fold ‘hotdog’ style (iykyk) and cut down the middle. This craft works best with 12 X 18 size, especially if you have a lot of long names in your classroom. I used 12 X 9 in my example since that was all I had.
Prep: write the child’s name in white. You can also skip this step and use white liquid glue instead. Cut tissue paper into small pieces. Separate tissue into to containers. I like to use a couple of small pencil storage containers for each table to share.

Have students ball up their tissue paper and glue it to their name outline!

That’s it! Simple, pretty, and keeps them busy!

Tips and Tricks:
- This activity can take a LONG time, especially for the younger ones. You may want to have them ball up their tissue paper one day and complete the craft another day, or ball it up for them beforehand.
- Some students get super frustrated when their fingers get sticky and the tissue paper gets stuck (especially our neuro-spicy friends). Using a glue stick on the outline, then putting the tissue paper down a little at a time usually helps.
- Contain the tissue paper in something!
- Have the students that finish quickly (and typically have the shorter names) walk around to help other classmates.
- Have something ready to go for the early finishers to do (besides helping others). Look below for a FREE back to school mystery picture download!
