Trying to help your students learn letter sounds? This is the perfect game! I mean, they won’t even realize their learning, and aren’t those the best activities for little learners? I like this particular game for learning vowel sounds because it takes learning up a level beyond by having them recognize short vowel sounds in the middle of the word. They’re not just recalling the sounds, but using them in context.
Different ways to play:
- Small group: Use for a small group activity during ELA groups- there are 6 different boards! Why not let a student led the BINGO and call out cards?
- Whole group: You may get some tandem “BINGO’s” depending on where each child places their chips, but it’s a great way to practice or review whole group on a Fun Friday!
- Partner/Literacy Center: Have students work together to pick cards, sound them out, and find the corresponding letters. They can play against each other or take turns playing.
- Other ways to use: Use to help readers struggling with vowel/middle sounds 1-0n-1 with you, instructional assistant, or instructional volunteers. Place cards around the room to create a BINGO scavenger hunt, have them work with table groups, etc!

Needed:
- Printed off BINGO boards and CVC picture cards
- Included BINGO cold coin ‘chips’ printed and ready to go, or your own chips/counters/BINGO dabbers (I used gold coins that I found at Target in the Party section- also came with cute gems!) Chocolate gold coins would be perfect and double as a yummy prize!

Prep- All you’ll need to do for prep is print and laminate (optional) what you need! Decide how you want to play…and have fun!
In Action- I like to review skills before playing a game. I would start by writing each vowel on the table (I am a big write on the table with Expo kind of teacher) and review each of the short sounds. Then, I would hand out the BINGO boards and say each sound (several times) and have the kids point to the sounds they hear. Next, I would show a few of the cards, help sound out, then ask for them to listen to the middle sound. We would practice a few of those together while pointing to the vowel sound on their BINGO board. Next, we learn the rules of play. After that, we play a few rounds as time allows! Sometimes I give prizes if I have them available- stickers, leftover Froot Loops or Lucky Charms from previous Fun Friday snacks, or smelly smilies with my scented markers. BONUS– use the CVC Spelling Practice FREEBIE sheet afterwards for extra practice or a tangible checkpoint. It’s included with TpT BINGO set if you’re purchasing, but click the above link to grab it for FREE!

Have fun!
