Valentine’s Day Sight Word Read the Room

My students complete a weekly scavenger hunt around the room either for math, vocabulary, or reading the room. Yep. Every week! I love that it can be used as an independent activity and great review, AND it gets them moving! I typically have 1 small group go at a time as part of our Fun Friday rotations.

Prep– Pick which 12 sight word heart cards you’d like to use. Print, laminate, cut, and hide around the room. I make sure to “hide” mine at their eye level and not near places I don’t want them to go (like near my small group table where they’ll easily interrupt). Use the editable version to use the exact sight words your students are working on. Copy off recording sheets and have clipboards handy! I bought a class set that each student keeps in their cubby.

In Action– Have your kiddos walk around the room and find their sight words. Read and write each word found! Have them check each other’s work, make a sentence, rainbow write or work in pairs to extend and differentiate!

Personally, for classroom management’s sake and what works for me, here are my rules we practice as we’re getting used to the weekly hunts:

  • Walking feet
  • If there is 1 person already there, find a different one and come back!
  • If you need help, ask 3 before me.
  • Don’t interrupt my group to ask me where they’re hidden. 😉 (this is a BIG one)
  • Inside voices

You can level by using different words per group, or use the laminated cards to play sight words games- ideas: sight word slap, read and keep card game, pull and read, etc.

Sometimes, a group will run out of time and be pretty upset that they didn’t find everything. I’ll keep up my hunts until the following week so they can finish as an “I’m done” activity (change out every Friday).
