Prep– I print out and copy the graph, sorting mats, and choose which extension activity I want to include (my download comes with a data gathering sheet and heart addition). There is a full color sorting mat that can be printed off and laminated ahead of time. You’ll need a few bags of candy hearts. I found these ‘end of conversation’ hearts. Ha!

In Action– If we are practicing our color words, I will use the B&W version and have them find the color words, then color in their sorting mats beforehand. Give them a handful, sort, record on the sheet, then complete the additional extension activities for those high fliers or the “I’m dooonnneee!” crew.

We do a ton of graph and snack activities throughout the year that by this time of the year, they are very proficient in filling in a graph. So, we usually do snack and graphs as whole group as a Fun Friday Snack. In the beginning of the year, all of my graphing activities were small group with LOTS of modeling.
