This is such a feel good activity for this time of the year. You’ll have your students filling each other’s buckets while practicing writing and speaking/listening skills.
Easy Prep– I print out the writing pages I need and copy them onto color cardstock. Then I write each student’s name onto an index card, fold, and mix in a container.
In Action– First, I start with reading a Valentine’s Day book where the characters make a letter/Valentine for someone. My favorites are:
During small group time over the week, I pull my writing groups and have them pick a name out of the container. That’s who they will craft a Valentine’s Day letter to. I always give ideas on expanding what they could write, otherwise you’ll get a lot of “I like you” ‘s. – Why do you like that friend? What makes that friend special? – We also discuss that even if they pull out someone who is not their ‘very best friend’, that we don’t say “awwww, I don’t want so-and-so”, or “I don’t like them”, etc. and work together to find something positive to write.

I use the pages differently depending on what group I pull. Some students get sentence starters, some I help sound spell, and for others I will write words they may want to use and copy- ex: love, like, dear, etc. I even will have a few high fliers working on adding details to their writing. It’s an easy activity to differentiate and meet your kids’ needs!
At the end of the week during our Author Share time, or during our Valentine’s Day celebration, the kinders take turns sharing aloud their letters and give them to the recipient. And- UHG, you’ll get the biggest, sweetest smiles. Enjoy!
